Taco Bake

If you like crescent rolls, sour cream, and DORITOS – then this is the recipe for you! It’s simple and it’s great! The kids love it because it’s covered in chips!!!!

A great friend of mine made this for me about 7 years ago and it’s stuck with us ever since, thanks Amy!

Ingredients:
1 lb. hamburger
1 pkg. taco seasoning
8 oz. sour cream
1 pkg. crescent rolls (8)
1 can tomato sauce
1 can diced tomatoes (optional)
1 c. shredded cheese
Dorito chips

1. Brown hamburger and drain.

2. Add taco seasoning, tomato sauce, tiny bit of water, and diced tomatoes. Simmer…

 

3. In a Glass 9 Inch x 13 Dish , press out crescent rolls and roll them to form crust.

 

4. Here comes the Dairy!!! Layer hamburger mixture, sour cream and then cheese.

 

 

 

5. Crush about 3/4 of a bag of Doritos and put them on top. Bake at 350 for 30 min.

  2. So I just put this all together and it’s in the oven now. I pray it’s good and the rolls don’t turn out gooey like the posts above or my family is gonna shoot me lol.

  3. Tasty recipe but it helps to cook the crescents before adding all the ingredients in the oven- otherwise you end up with burned doritos and raw dough.

  4. I see some people have made this & the rolls were mushy. How do we prevent this? I want to know prior to making it & ruining dinner. :) Thanks!!

      In her instructions she specified using a glass casserole dish and that is the key to making sure the dough cooks thoroughly. I just fixed this for my fam this evening and it turned out perfect! I used store brand croissant roll dough and sprayed the bottom of my dish with cooking spray before laying down the dough and the dough cooked up just fine!! :)

  9. Made this for din din today. It is very good. Next time I would add onions and garlic to the beef when cooking. I would also cook the crescent rolls before adding beef on top it was a lil soggy for me. And wait to add the chips at the last 5-10 mins to keeps crunchy.

  10. This was pretty good, especially since i’ve had failed pinterest recipes lately! like the commenter above, bake the crescent rolls a bit first, mine were a bit raw in the middle. otherwise very good.

    Does the pan need to be greased?

    • 1st time I made this a long time ago I followed the recipe to a T. Tonight I stumbled upon this recipe on my pinterest and decided I needed to make for dinner. But I got creative!

      I cooked hb meat, added taco seasoning, and some salsa. Sprayed my pan with pam, put Cresent rolls in, then put hb mixture on top. I used a can of rotel with green chilies and mixed together with my sour cream and added that as my next layer. Then I chopped up iceberg lettuce and added that as a layer. Then my cheese was next and then doritos to top it off. Baked at 350 for about 30 mins and came out and was delicious!

  13. My husband slammed his fist on the table and said “I approve”. I can’t remember the last time I made something new and he said that. I didn’t cook it with the doritos, just crumbled them after we were done. We demolished half the pan between the two of us. We probably could have finished if we had less self control.

    Yes the crescent rolls were still mushy, but I really think that it helps sweeten some of the Mexican spiciness.

    I made this tonight. YUMMY it was! I did change a couple things after reading other peoples comments… I prebaked the crescent rolls for about 4 minutes, they were just barley golden brown… Next time, I will add the doritos the last 10 minutes of baking time. Because the doritos get rather brown if you put them on from the beginning of the bake time. I also opted to leave the sour cream out, so that we could put our own sour cream on our serving.. Overall very yummy!

    I found it works best yo use flour to roll out the crescents.bake first for about 10 mins (we have a weaker oven). I add chips last 5 mins or so to toast or they burn! Or just add last, still just as good. Only put on ths part your going to eat. Chips will be soggy leftovers…so don’t put over entire thing if your not planning on eatting all of it in one night. Enjoy! This is one of my favorites and its super easy! 😉
    Also good if you add some taco toppers like lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream etc. (After cooking)

    oh my gosh, so good! I baked the crust for about 7 minutes before I added the toppings (leaving out the sour cream), and waited to add the doritos until the last 10 minutes of baking. I served it with sliced avocado. it turned out perfectly! my boyfriend loved it too.

  21. I am doing something similar tonight. I am planning on layering everything and baking long enough to melt cheese. I am leaving chips off because I would like to scoop up with chips. Also, I found a guacamole chip at the store tonight and am excited to try it! Thank you for a few more ideas to try!!! :)

    I used this receipe as a base to add heathier options and my kids loved it! I used black beans, low fat cheese, fat free sour cream, reduced fat cresent rolls, and made my own tomato sauce and diced timatoes.I added black olives and shredded baby spinach to put on top after it came out of the oven. We also used tortilla chips if you wanted. I am sure there are tons of ways to make this! Thank you for sharing!!!

    I HAVE A QUESTION! Has anyone ever tried adding a spanish/mexican rice layer to this dish? I was thinking about adding rice next time but I dont want to mess it up. What do you think?

    • I have a family recipe for something kinda similar wherein you make Spanish rice first. Grease your 9 x 13 pan and add the cooked and cooled Spanish rice. Brow ground beef or turkey and drain. Add chopped onion, garlic, salt and pepper before adding chili powder. Add 14 ounce can diced tomatoes, 3 tablespoons tomato paste and simmer for 20 minutes. Cool to room temperature and add atop rice in an even layer. Schmear sour cream over meat. Sprinkle over minced jalapeno (fresh or pickled). Sprinkle over 2 cups shredded jack cheese. We never added a crunchy topping but I would add any crushed Doritos towards the end of cooking time or as a side wherein people could add some to the finished and plated dish

  26. Made this tonight for dinner. I baked the crescent rolls for about 8 minutes prior to putting the meat mixture on top. Used a half a bag of Doritos and next time I’ll use a bit less. My picky sons loved it and so did my husband and I. Thanks for sharing it, Amy!

  27. Yo seriously bake the cresent rolls and don’t add the chips until the cheese starts melting. holy moly its very good i used TVP instead of beef by adding beef stock and woscheshire sauce. yumm.

  28. Made it tonight … Baked crust first.. A hit by everyone! I would add extra sour cream and maybe olives next time. A little spicy.. So either less taco mix.. Or less Doritos …. Hmmm.. Maybe Doritos and plain tortillas mixed!

  32. Made this today for our church luncheon. It was a huge hit. I did not bake the crescent rolls first and it turned out awesome. I substituted 2 cans of chicken instead of ground beef, I used a can of rotel instead of regular diced tomatoes, and used taco flavored doritos. There was only one serving left and everyone wanted the recipe! Yummy!

So we’ve made this a half dozen times and not once had the crescent rolls turn out gooey, but our version does not include the diced tomatoes(I’ve got a skin allergy to the seed casing- I can eat tomato sauce, and ketchup, etc, but start swelling if I eat whole tomatoes). We double up the taco seasoning and mix it with the sour cream before layering, and use either Taco or Cheese doritos and add them to the bottom on top of the crescent rolls, so I don’t know if it’s the lack of extra juice, or the extra doritos at the bottom, but it’s so nummy!   35. I made this but tweaked it a little based on other reviews. I baked the crescent rolls 10 min –as suggested– first before layering, and omitted the tomatoes, but spread a layer of refried beans on before the meat mixture and didn’t top off with doritos until the last 5 min of the baking time. Also shortened the baking time to 25 minutes & on put on the rack furthest from the bottom of the oven. TURNED OUT PERFECT!! SO DELICIOUS!! <3

  36. I made this for dinner tonight. It was yummy. I put refried beans between the hamburger mixture and sour cream. I also used rotel tomatoes instead of regular tomatoes. Fresh toppings add to it. I recommended like others said to bake the crescent rolls first.

    We make this often, and turns out fine. I use Boca crumbles instead of beef. Well the hubs used part of the crumbles in another dish, so I stirred in refried beans along with the boca/tomato mix. yum.

  40. I make the bake and eat it with the Doritos as cups since tortilla chips get soggy when you try to reheat the dish.

  43. I’m making this right now. I used a bigger can of tomato sauce since that’s what I had already and the Salsa Verde Dorritos instead of regular, I hope it comes out good. Has my house smelling amazing!

  47. This recipe was delicious and a hit at my Super Bowl party! Everyone was complimenting the dish throughout the night!! I added some taco rice that ‘Knoor’ makes, for some extra flavor and layer to the dish. They are sold next to the Mexican ingredients or next to pasta. Definitely doing this again, a total hit.   49. Ive made this a ton of times… Skip the Cresant adm just do a layer of Doritos at the bottom… No worries they won’t get soggy… I put a thin layer of cheese as a liquid barrier just in case

  50. I made this tonight. It was hit with my family. The only thing I did differently was I used 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef and increased the shredded cheese to about 2 cups. Approx 341 calories per serving if you devide your 13×9 dish into 15 servings.
